Who Will Dominate? Small Tablets Or Big Smartphones

In the era of technology a lot of launches for tablets and smartphones are taking place. And they are overlapping each other in terms of aimed functionality and targeted users. Just try to think for a while that why get a 4.3 inch Android Smartphone like HTC Desire HD instead of Dell Streak, which features the same OS and a bigger 5 inch screen.

The point to ponder is that they both feel the same, except the screen size. Both of them have almost same hardware specifications as CPU, screen resolution, RAM and connectivity options. Both feel the same while working, so not a much of a reason to choose one over the other. Personally, tablets are completely different from smartphones. Tablets should have a different OS that should help the user to get different things done on the go.

Where Should The Difference Be?
The differences between smartphone and tablets should be clear at the hardware and software level. Tablets should try their best to bring 90-95% of the PC experience to a smaller screen with a long lasting battery life. Whereas smartphones should fight developers to make specialized versions for mobile websites and applications that can bring 90% of the functionality of a product formatted to a smaller screen and a less powerful device.

Totally new technology should be developed for video on smartphones, which will automatically adjust with the bit-rate and resolution as well. So that the overall quality is preserved and the resource consumption i-e CPU and memory, is kept lower.

Well the next 2-3 years are crucial, until consumers realize what I said above. Then they will demand customization not compatibility. Probably the consequences will be that we will not see too many 4-5 inch devices, as there isn’t enough space for them in our pockets.
